Retaining Walls in Cape Cod, Massachusetts
A retaining wall holds back soil, so it is a structure first and a finished surface second. AR Mansory builds stone, masonry and wood retaining walls across Cape Cod for terraced yards, driveway edges, pool areas and slopes that need to become usable space.
What matters is what you cannot see: excavation behind the wall, compacted base, drainage stone, filter fabric, a drain line with somewhere to go, and backfill placed in lifts. Most failed retaining walls failed because water was left behind them.
Stone & masonry retaining walls
Segmental block, natural stone and mortared masonry walls are the long-term option. They carry more load, hold their line over time and can be capped and faced to match the rest of the property.
Block systems interlock and step back into the slope, natural stone is fitted piece by piece, and mortared masonry acts as one rigid structure. Which one suits depends on wall height, load above the wall and the look you want.
Wood retaining walls
Pressure-treated timber walls go in faster and cost less, and they suit lower landscape walls, planting terraces and informal areas. The trade-off is service life: wood in contact with soil and moisture has a finite lifespan, while stone and masonry do not decay.
If a wall is holding a driveway, a structure or a significant slope, we will recommend stone or masonry instead.
Landscape retaining structures
Not every wall is structural. Low terraces, planting beds, grade transitions between a patio and a lawn, and steps built into a slope all use the same techniques at a smaller scale.
- Terraced walls on sloped yards
- Driveway and parking edge walls
- Pool-area and patio seat walls
- Planting terraces and garden walls
- Steps integrated into a wall run
Frequently Asked Questions
- Stone or wood — which should I choose?
- Stone and masonry for anything holding real load or intended to last decades; wood for lower landscape walls where cost and speed matter more than service life. Wood in soil eventually decays, and that is the main difference.
- Does a retaining wall need drainage?
- Yes. Soil behind a wall holds water, and water adds pressure. Drainage stone, filter fabric and a drain line with an outlet let that water leave rather than push on the back of the wall.
- Can a leaning wall be repaired?
- A wall that has rotated or bulged has usually lost its base or its drainage, and rebuilding that section is more reliable than resetting the face. We will look at what is behind it before recommending anything.
