Masonry in Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Masonry is the core of what AR Mansory does. We build outdoor structures in natural stone, cut stone and concrete block — walls, steps, piers, columns, veneer and the masonry elements that tie a patio, pool area or entry together.

Every masonry element depends on what is under it. Footings, base material and drainage are set for the soil on the site, because a wall or set of steps built on an inadequate base will move regardless of how well the stone is laid.

Stone masonry

Natural stone is used where the finished structure should look like it belongs on the property. New England fieldstone, granite and cut stone can be laid mortared or dry-laid depending on the structure and the look you want.

Stone selection, joint style and coursing change the character of a wall more than almost anything else, so those decisions are made with you before the work starts.

Block masonry

Concrete block is used where structure matters more than appearance, or where it will be faced with stone or veneer. It is efficient for retaining structures, pool-area walls, steps, planters and the supporting elements behind a finished surface.

Outdoor masonry projects

Most masonry we build is part of a larger outdoor project: steps down to a patio, piers for a pergola, a seat wall around a fire area, a masonry edge where a pool deck meets a lawn, or a veneer face on an existing structure.

  • Seat walls, piers and columns
  • Planters and raised beds
  • Stone veneer over block or concrete
  • Repairs and rebuilds of existing outdoor masonry

Frequently Asked Questions

Can existing masonry be repaired instead of rebuilt?
Sometimes. Repointing, resetting stone or rebuilding a section is often possible when the base and footing are still sound. If the structure has moved because of drainage or an inadequate base, repairs on the surface will not last, and we will tell you that during the site visit.
What is the difference between mortared and dry-laid stone?
Mortared stonework is bonded with mortar and behaves as one rigid structure, which suits steps, piers and taller walls. Dry-laid stone relies on fit and weight, moves slightly with the ground and drains freely, which suits many landscape and property walls.
